Custodial sentence

This is a sentence of imprisonment or detention. Adults are sent to prison, young people aged 18 to 20 are sent to a young offenders institution, and young people aged under 18 are placed
in secure accommodation under the care of the local authority. In most cases, people will serve part of their sentence in the community under certain conditions. If they commit an offence while serving their sentence in the community, the court can order their return to prison.
