New death by driving interactive case study

7th May 2024

The Council has developed a new interactive scenario on death by dangerous driving – offering people the chance to play the role of a judge.

The ‘If you were the judge’ activity follows the case of Tom, a motorist who has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Participants can select different scenarios and answer questions to reach a sentencing decision before finding out if it matches the sentence likely to be handed down in court.

The case study also contains information on the Council’s death by driving sentencing guideline, which will help to guide participants towards the appropriate sentence – just as it does for judges.

The guideline, which came into effect in January this year, includes sentencing ranges which vary depending on the level of seriousness of the offence.

The new scenario is the latest addition to the ‘If you were the judge’ activities, which also include cases of robbery and speeding.

Visit the case study webpage to find out what you would do if you were the judge.
