New easy read guide on sentencing in Scotland

Engagement, Sentencing information
9th December 2025

A new easy read guide on Sentencing of Crimes in Scotland has been published by the Council.

The publication offers simple explanations on how a court decides a sentence and the different sentencing options available.

It also explains how sentencing hearings work and what to expect for those who are attending court, or want to know more about the process.

Easy read is a format that simplifies complex information and makes written text more accessible through plain language, short sentences and pictures.

The guide was produced with support from the Supporting Offenders with Learning Disabilities (SOLD) Network, a charity which supports offenders with communication needs. The Council would like to extend its thanks to the charity and its members for their helpful contributions.
