New video on community sentencing

Engagement, Sentencing
23rd January 2024

A new video by the Scottish Sentencing Council offers an insight into community sentencing in Scotland, with various contributors sharing their views and experiences.

The short film includes interviews with an offender who has been sentenced to a community payback order (CPO) and a victims’ expert who describes how community disposals are viewed by those who have been impacted by crime.

Leading academic Fergus McNeill, professor of criminology and social work, also offers some detail on what is involved in a CPO and how they compare to other types of sentences, while Sheriff Krista Johnston talks about how sentencing decisions are reached.

The video, the first in a series on sentencing in Scotland, also features an interview with journalist Alan Richardson on his experience as a court reporter.

The film aims to help inform the public about community sentencing and raise greater awareness of the use of CPOs and what they involve.

The Council is currently developing a video on prison sentences which will be released later this year as part of the series.

The community sentencing video can be viewed here.
