Recruitment of new Council lay member

Recruitment
10th December 2024

The Scottish Ministers are recruiting the appointment of a new member to the Council. The vacancy is for the Council’s lay member, which is open to any individual who is not qualified as a judicial or legal member.

The Council is chaired by the Lord Justice Clerk and, in addition to a lay member, includes six judicial members, a prosecutor, advocate, solicitor, police constable, and a person with knowledge of victims issues.

The successful candidate will assist the Council in its preparation of sentencing guidelines and development of sentencing policy within Scottish courts. Current priorities include the development of sentencing guidelines in relation to certain sexual offences, domestic abuse offences, sentence discounting, environment and wildlife crimes, and sentencing people with mental health and related issues.

Members should expect approximately 12 days’ commitment each year, which will include attending meetings of the Council and any committees the member sits on, as well as attending engagement and promotional events.

For more information, see the full advert.

The closing time and date for applications is by midnight on 6 January 2025.

For further information about the Council, or the role, please contact Ondine Tennant, Secretary to the Council, at otennant@scotcourts.gov.uk.
