The Council has launched a new blog page to report on issues relating to sentencing practice in more depth, alongside our news items. Our first blog focuses on visits by some of our members to HM Young Offenders’ Institution, Polmont and HM Prison, Low Moss.

The Council hosted visiting colleagues from England & Wales and the Australian states of Victoria & Tasmania at its recent meeting - hearing about different ways to develop an effective work programme at an early stage.

Lord Carloway, the Lord President, spoke yesterday of the Council’s role in sentencing when he delivered the speech, 'Imprisonment in Scotland: towards a penological post-modernism’ to the Scottish Universities Insight Institute.

Council member Allan Findlay has been appointed as one of Scotland’s first summary sheriffs.

Secondary legislation is now in place requiring the Council to submit a three-year Business Plan to the Scottish Parliament.
